My Speed

I worked at a restaurant in college and I remember a girl finishing up her last day of work. She said, “They’re going to miss me when I’m gone. They don’t even know all the things I do around here.”

After she left, I didn’t see any tears falling or devastation, as the restaurant continued business as usual. I still think of her when I am so consumed by my “doings” – is my attitude of self-importance or of a servant’s heart? Is this what Jesus is asking me to carry, or is this busyness of my own doing?

My friend sent me this 30 minute video last week about slowing down – https://www.livegodspeed.org. My favorite part was thinking about the speed that Jesus lived – He walked everywhere, and took time talking to people and praying alone. He is God. Do I have so much more that I need to accomplish at a greater speed than how God moves?

This is my prayer for these summer days – Father God, may I remember that everything is not dependent on me. You are God and I am not. Help me to slow down and be present to my people today. Lead me. Fill me with wisdom, patience, and creativity. I have many good desires, but I will trust that as the day unfolds, your plans are better. I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
