Roots

I’ve written about roots before, and God continues to give me physical reminders of how He is working in my life. I was on vacation in Ohio last summer, and along the shores of a beach there were trees above us on the cliff with no physical ground under them. They were still standing straight up and alive by the strength of their roots running deep into the ground near the tree. It was fascinating. How do they not blow over with the wind or storms that come through?

And then later when I was planting some bushes, I was trying to cut through some roots in the ground but they were so thick! I couldn’t believe their durability, so I gave up trying to chop them with the shovel and just planted around them.

I think about these roots in connection with my spiritual journey as of late. These past few months I felt God asking me to rest. It’s hard to say no to some things I really enjoy, but I know obedience to God brings life. I wonder how these slower days are strengthening my roots in His love and faithfulness.

Father God, I trust that you are nourishing and strengthening my roots in your love.

May my roots be so durable to withstand wear, pressure, or damage.

May I be attentive to the ways you are present to me and leading me.

May I be deeply connected to and dependent on you.

Protect me from complacency and distractions.

I pray this in the name of Jesus, who is always good and kind.

Wrap me in the warmth of your arms. Amen.
