When Worry Arises

This morning my head was racing, wondering how my dad was feeling. I talked to my mom last night and she said he had an infection that they couldn’t get the medicine for until the next day. It had already been two days, and he was sleeping a lot, and had a fever and chills. I was anxious to know how the night went, if they had to go to the hospital.

In my prayer this morning, Jesus kindly brought me the story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead from John 11. There’s so much to unpack in this story, so I’ll point out what brought me comfort and peace today.

  • Jesus’ friends Martha and Mary sent word to Jesus that their brother was ill. He could not come immediately, and when he did, it was four days after Lazarus’ death. I praise God that when I asked Jesus to be with my dad last night and to heal him of this infection, I already knew that Jesus was there. I am grateful that He’s not limited by a physical body and that Jesus never leaves us.
  • When Jesus saw them weeping, He also became deeply troubled, and wept himself. I praise God that Jesus is compassionate and understands what we are going through. He understands why I’m worried about my dad, and He cares about my feelings and emotions.
  • In John 11:40, Jesus told Martha, “Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?” This line changes my heart to one of surrender. As I believe, I know that God’s ways are not my ways. I surrender understanding why this is happening and the way God is working. He is worthy of my trust.

Jesus, I sit in waiting, believing you are there with my dad and my mom. It’s out of my control, he is in your strong, caring hands. Please heal him. I believe you are in my present, and you will be in my future, and that as I believe in you, I will see the glory of God.  Maybe I won’t understand your ways, but I know you are worthy of my trust.  I love you, thanks for being so close and calming my worries and fears this morning. Amen.
