In the Same Boat

I imagine Jesus’ compassionate heart being so sad when He witnessed humans condemning one another of their sins.

“Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” John 8:7

Do you remember when Jesus said that? The Pharisees tried to trick Jesus, by bringing to Him a woman caught in adultery and asking Jesus what her punishment should be. Jesus responded by reminding them that they are all sinners. However, the Pharisees’ hearts were so hardened that they couldn’t begin to accept Jesus and His message.

Do you remember how Jesus responded to the woman? The compassion He had for this woman whose sin was made public. I can imagine Him, meeting her eyes, and a concerned look upon His face, as He said, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She replied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.” John 8:10-11

The truth is that without Jesus, we are all in the same boat, perishing. All of us. I forget this again and again, and have to watch my words and thoughts. We all need Jesus. He came to save all of us, to free all of us from the darkness.

Lord, transform my heart. Help me to not judge. Help me to give others the benefit of the doubt, and extend mercy. It is not my job to judge but to love. I never know the whole story like you do, and I only need to love and extend grace. Give me the strength to forgive. I also ask that when I sin, that I would turn to you like the woman and see the love and compassion in your eyes. Thank you for your loving mercy. Amen.
